    Anti-oxidants

    Free radicals in your body can be very harmful if an oxidation reaction occurs. For example: proteins, useful fats and even your DNA can be affected. This can lead to severe diseases including cancer. Anti-oxidants bind these free radicals and thereby make them harmless, so you understand it’s important to have many of these anti-oxidants in your body.
    Spirulina is a rich source of anti-oxidants, particularly beta-carotene. This nutrient is mainly protective against mutations in the DNA, which can cause cancer. The many amino acids in spirulina are also of great importance for the formation of anti-oxidants in the form of enzymes. Anti-oxidants have much more useful functions in your body:

    • Protective force against formation of cholesterol in the blood vessel walls and against arthritis or Alzheimer’s disease.
    • Protection of the endothelial cells which covered our veins and against degenerative processes in the brains that lead to Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.
    • Preventing platelets to accumulate in our body. Delays of the oxidation stimulant effect of stress hormones (catecholamines).
    • Protection against damage of Type II Diabetes and by the ageing process.

    If you are undergoing chemotherapy, it is also highly recommended to eat enough anti-oxidants, research has shown that anti-oxidants positivly effect chemotherapy and could prolong the lifespan. B12

    Spirulina is a very rich source of vitamin B12, a vitamine that is only found in animal products. It is known that a lot of vegans have insufficient vitamine B12. This could result in anaemia and problems with your memory at a later age. Also vegetarians could have a B12 deficiency. Antenna Spirulina is an excellent solution.

    Leaf green

    Spirulina contains loads of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll gives leaves their green color and is essential to the photosynthetic process inside plants, which converts CO2 in O2. So it is clear that we benefit everyday from this substance, but chlorophyll can also be usefull inside our body. It has a cleansing effect because it can get rid of toxic substances. Normal products won’t provide us with this many chlorophyll because plants usually have strong cell walls which are hard to break down. Spirulina doesn’t have a cell wall, so the chlorophyll can be absorbed a lot easier.

    Energy

    The most common sugars in spirulina are rhamnose and glycogen, the body absorbes these sugars are very easily, providing quick energy.

    Because spirulina supplies energy quickly, it is very suitable for gaining energy during sports and the restore of your muscles after a strenuous effort.

    Gamma-linolic acid

    Spirulina is a very rich source of gamma-linolic acid (GLA), this is one of the famous omega fatty acids. GLA provides you with a good functioning and healthy vessel system. A study at the Nottingham University Hospital showed that GLA can also play an important role in the fight against breast cancer. To show the overall importance of GLA an overview of it’s functions, GLA:
    slows down inflammation reactions;
    slows down thrombosis formation;
    reduces the blood pressure;
    slows down the production of cholesterol;
    stimulates immune cells (and thus the immune system);
    reduces pre menstrual complaints;
    reduces skin diseases.
    It also appears to have a positive result on MS.

    HIV

    Because spirulina is so unique, people try to apply it to as many areas as possible. It even seems that spirulina has an HIV-inhibiting effect. As early as 1998 was published that spirulina could halve the HIV production in the main cells of your immune system.

    More recently results on AIDS-patiens in Africa have shown some hopeful relults: people feel more energy and get ill less rapidly.

    Prehistoric quality!

    Spirulina is one of the oldest know lifeforms on earth, but that is not all. Thanks to it’s ideal composition spirulina has remained the same for all those years. That means that the spirulina produced today is exactly the same as the spirulina millions of years ago.
    Whether this has to do with the survival of this prehistoric organism is not clear, but spirulina is notable because of the diversity of its nutritional profile: spirulina contains all the amino acids, 14 different vitamines, 12 minerals, loads of chlorophyll and omega fatty acids. The reason that spirulina hasn’t changed for all those years could be that this is a perfect balance of all these nutritional components.

    Protein

    60% Of spirulina consists of protein. This is about three times as much as an ordinary piece of meat.

    Protein is very important for a lot of processes in your body, like metabolism and cel construction, but also your muscles can’t go without enough protein. So you must make sure you get enough of it. Especially for vegetarians and vegans this could be a problem. In such cases spirulina can offer an excellent solution. Spirulina contains alle the amino acids that exist (proteins are chains of amino acids), so you can really help out your body.

    Synthetic vitamins?

    Is Spirulina is better than synthetic vitamins? For most vitamines it doesn’t matter whether they are synthetic or natural. For vitamine E, on contrary, it’s essential that it is natural, synthetic forms can even bring health risks. An overdose of vitamine A can also be toxic. Spirulina contains beta carrotene, because your body only converts beta carrotene to vitamine A when you need it, your body is able to handle a lot more of the beta carrotene than pure vitamine A.

    Malnutrition

    Hunger isn’t todays biggest problem anymore, systematic malnutrition is. A shortage of micro-nutrients (vitamins, minerals and amino acids) hampers the growth of children and the welfare of vital functions in your body.
    According to UNICEF figures 36,000 children across are dying daily of malnutrition.
    In India, almost 47% of children up to 3 is malnutritioned, and that is more than 20% for the entire population. These are only figures of the country as one part, but you can imagine that in the slums these figures will be many times higher.
    The most shortages are in vitamin A, iron and protein. Spirulina contains many of these nutrients and can therefore play a major role in the fight against malnutrition.

    For the elderly

    Spirulina contains a lot of vitamine B12, when your ageing it becomes harder to obtain this vitamine, but you will need it even more. A lack of B12 will cause fatigue, problems with concentrating, anaemia and it can even cause dementia. The combination of B12 , iron and chlorofyl makes spirulina a very good remedie to anaemia. Of all the algues (e.g. chlorella) spirulina contains the most vitamine B12 (Burtin, 2003).
